“Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist.”

Eileen Millar, The Girl Who Spoke With Pictures.

I offer private work from my studio space in Bangor, Co. Down. This is the result of a 24-year commitment to building expertise in my role as an Art Psychotherapist. During this period, I worked in adult and childrens mental health, and I have extensive experience of working within education, the NHS, Social Services, the Prison Service and various mental health organisations across the province. It is through my experience of working with trauma and mental health difficulties that I can adapt my sessions to make them more personal for each individual need.

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy enhances people’s lives by offering a safe space to explore, express, create and play through the use of art materials.

Art Therapy is applicable for everyone, those who feel lost, unhappy and want to explore themselves and their inner worlds and to those who are experiencing extreme difficulties.

Art Therapy by nature is adaptable and responsive to each persons needs, abilities, wants, and as such it may help you to feel accepted for who and where you are now.

By engaging in the creative process you will develop a wonderful life skill which can be used to express emotions, foster self-belief and acceptance, manage behaviours and feelings. It gives opportunities to enhance physical, mental and emotional well being.

You do not need to have any proficiency in art to receive the benefits. There is no right or wrong way of doing; it is all about the process of creating and working at your own pace. It is available for people of all ages.

Art therapy can achieve different things for different people. It can be used for healing, rehabilitation, and reduction of stress. It can be a great tool in time of transition, grief, growth and healing.

I offer a safe, contained, confidential space to explore, express and play at my art studio located at Boom Studios in Bangor. The setting is a creative environment which enhances and inspires the art-making experience.

Even though together we set goals the essence of Art Therapy always beats its own heart through spontanaeity, play, shared looking, relationship and exploration.

All Art Therapy sessions are strictly confidential and Oonagh adheres to the ethical requirements set by the HCPC, BAAT, ( British Association of Art Therapists) and GDPR.
